Chapter 6

“OKAY, let’s take one more trip down the bars,” Johnny said, though Marty’s arms felt ready to give out.

“You’re a real sadist,” Marty griped, but he turned around and slowly forced his legs to move. It still felt as though he were trying to send the signals to his legs through a bowl of pudding, but if he thought hard enough, he could get them to move.

“You can do this,” Johnny said, standing at the far side of the bars. “Maybe if I got Quinn to stand here making kissy noises, you’d try harder.” Johnny could be such a tease, but Marty smiled anyway.

“Shut up,” he retorted and looked down to lift his foot.

“Look ahead, not at your feet. Your brain needs to create the new pathway, and it doesn’t go through your eyes. I know it seems harder, but in the long run you’ll progress faster if you can lift your leg without looking.”

Marty swore and looked at Johnny, forcing his legs to move. “You… are… one… mean… bastard,” Marty grunted as he took each baby step.

“Maybe, but you made it,” Johnny said with a smile before helping Marty into his chair. “You did good today,” Johnny told him with a smile, and Marty used all his restraint to keep from flipping him off. His legs hurt, his arms ached, and he was breathing like a racehorse after a hard run. But Johnny was right—he had made it, and more than once, which was an improvement.

“Why is it taking so long?” Marty asked as he slowly wheeled himself toward the door.

Johnny followed behind him. “The stroke did a number on the part of your brain that controls your motor skills.” Johnny leaned against the desk while Marty pulled on his coat. “Sometimes when part of the brain is damaged, a whole new section takes over for it, and I think that’s probably what’s happening with you. That’s a good thing, but it also takes time and hard work. You can’t rush it. We’ve talked about injuries, and that’s exactly what will happen if we push too hard.” Johnny pushed himself away from the desk. “So to change the subject, tell me how things are going with your cowboy lover.”

“Quinn is Wally’s assistant,” Marty corrected.

“The man rides and works at the ranch too, doesn’t he?” Marty nodded. “Then he’s a cowboy, and everyone knows cowboys are sexy as hell, so spill.” Johnny’s eyes actually widened in anticipation. “Come on,” he coaxed.

“The last three weeks have been great,” Marty answered, moving closer to the door.

“I take it he hasn’t been spending much time in the bunkhouse over those three weeks.” Johnny grinned when Marty blushed. “I thought so.” Marty looked away. “A happy patient is a healthy patient, so whatever you two are doing seems to be working.” Johnny patted his shoulder. “Besides, everyone knows cowboys make the best rides.”

Marty felt his surliness slip away as he laughed out loud. “Where do you come up with this stuff?” Marty asked as he headed for the door.
